In an impressive demonstration of cricket prowess, the India women’s cricket team has secured their place in the Hangzhou Asian Games Gold Medal (final) match by dismantling the Bangladesh women's team in the semi-final of the Asian Games. The contest, held at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field, witnessed Bangladesh crumbling for a meager 51 runs, a target that India comfortably chased down, sealing an emphatic eight-wicket triumph.
The day belonged to the Indian bowlers who wreaked havoc in the Bangladesh batting order. Pooja Vastrakar emerged as the standout performer, clinching four crucial wickets. She received commendable support from Titas Sadhu, Amanjot Kaur, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, and Devika Vaidya, each contributing with a wicket apiece. Nigar Sultana emerged as the highest run-scorer for Bangladesh, making a modest 12 runs before getting run out courtesy of the agile Devika Vaidya.
Despite losing the early wickets of their opening pair, stand-in skipper Smriti Mandhana (7 runs) and the dynamic Shafali Verma (17 runs), India's response to the modest target remained steady. Jemimah Rodrigues, however, stole the limelight with a rapid innings, smashing 20 runs off a mere 15 balls. Kanika Ahuja, remaining unbeaten with just 1 run, ensured India's victory with eight wickets to spare.
This resounding win sets the stage for an enthralling Gold Medal (final) match, slated for Monday, the 25th of September, where India will confront either Pakistan or Sri Lanka. The identity of their adversary will be determined by the outcome of the second semi-final.
